Confronting memories of childhood abuse, particularly those suppressed by the conscious mind, is a difficult and disruptive process. I was extraordinarily fortunate that I had access to the resources, support, and relationships to help navigate my new reality.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to processing complex trauma; I learned what worked for me through a process of experimentation and discovery. This resource guide, while by no means comprehensive, includes many of the tools and additional reading materials that I found helpful in my own recovery, as well as organizations that are doing critical work to help survivors.
Please note that I am not a medical or mental health professional, and these resources are not a substitute for medical or mental health advice.
The single most vital tool that I discovered on my journey was my ability to tell: to share my story and forge connections with those who could listen. May this book inspire you to share your own story remembering that in the telling, we unbind the shame and discover new hope.
*In addition to these books, Tim Ferriss’ My Healing Journey After Childhood Abuse podcast episode with Debbie Millman was another resource that I reached for constantly.
